Retirement homes

Published: 8 December 2011

Before moving to France you may want to consider what it will be like if you decide to stay there into the later stages of retirement, when you might need some residential and medical care.

You should not even consider this unless your French is good enough to cope with everyday practical, social and medical problems, unless you move to an English-speaking home.

There is a wide choice of retirement homes (maisons de retraite) offering various kinds and standards of accommodation. They exist both in the public and the private sectors.

The choice can be confusing and complete advice is not always available from any one source.

In the full Moving to France helpguide, we explain:

  • Accommodation types
  • Costs
  • How to find a home
  • Tax implications
  • Financial aid
